Our History

Barone & Sons Real Estate Appraisal and Consulting opened its doors in 1917. Founded by A.J. Barone, grandfather of the current owners, Barone and Sons has been serving the Pittsburgh, PA area for 102 years. A.J. Barone was a first generation American from Italy with a seventh grade education who entered the real estate business and successfully bought, sold, developed, and built residential properties through the greater Pittsburgh region for 40 years.  In the late 1940s, after serving in World War II, A.J.’s son, Ray R. Barone, established himself as an appraiser. This changed the focus of the company in the mid-1950s to Real Estate Appraisal and Consulting. Today, Ray’s three sons, R. Robert Barone, SRA (entered the business in 1971), Stephen J. Barone MAI (entered in 1973) and J. Matthew Barone (entered in 1985) all became full time appraisers.  His daughter, Lark, worked for the company full time for 25 years and recently retired.

In 1986, Barone and Sons split into two companies, one residential appraisal and the other commercial/industrial appraisal.  Today they remain in the same building as two separate companies.  Robert Barone had been the President of Barone and Sons beginning in 1981, with J. Matthew Barone assuming the presidency this year.  Stephen Barone has been the President of Barone, Murtha, Shonberg since 1986 (part of Valbridge Property Advisors). Daniel Barone, Stephen’s son, has been an appraiser with the company since 1995. David Barone SRA (entered in 1985) and Carolyn Barone Franz (entered in 1985) are both experienced appraisers for Barone & Sons.  Alvin Barone, SRA worked with the company for 36 years and retired in 2015. Caroline Barone manages the financial Department and Debbie Barone handles the front office and client relations.

Barone & Sons has grown and expanded along with the Greater Pittsburgh area.  Our company has eight PA Certified Residential Appraisers, one General Appraiser, and two SRA designations. Additional Appraisers are: Edward Doyle (licensed since 1990), Kathryn Cinker (licensed since 2002), and Lisa M. Blair (licensed in 2017, trainee license 2014). Our current Appraiser Trainees are: Nathan Verner, Kevin Hamill, and Jessica Carpenter.
